Why is my 5 year old Pomeranian eating poop?

Why is my 5 year old Pomeranian eating poop?

by Tanya

(Las Vegas, NV)

My 5 year old Pom has just recently starting eating poop. He has never done this before. He is in excellent health and always gets his yearly shots and exam from the vet. Also, he never eats his own poop. Only poop from other dogs! Has anyone else ever experienced this with their Pomeranian? Any suggestions as to why this is suddenly happening? Thanks

Your Pomeranian is lacking vitamins

by: Jeremy

Hi Tanya,

My pomeranian used to do the same exact thing. At first I just thought it was a normal behavior, albeit a nasty one. Anyway’s, I started to get worried after awhile because he kept eating poop all the time and I was worried that he might get worms from the other dog’s feces. So, I called my vet and she told me that most likely my pom was lacking certain vitamins in his dog food. Suggested that I switch dog food brands which I did. Sure enough my pom stopped eating poop within a week. Hope this helps.

5 year old Pom eating poop.

by: Rita Rail

I asked my vet this question a long time ago as one of my shitzus was doing this. I began picking this up as soon as he was finished which was very inconvenient for me. He had his own little outdoor pen near the house but I could wait to clean it up at anytime, now I had to do it immediately after he was finished. She told me it tasted better on the way out as also digested cat food would. Everything that he was fed was being processed this way and was good. After about a month of constantly picking this up, he lost his appetite for it. Perhaps the new food was the solution and he was satisfied enough with the “IN” and let the “OUT” alone. A little more food if this starts up again to find out if his ration should be increased. Even though we are prepared with what to do with our newborn, it seems to be a guessing game at times, that is why we call on our mother, grandmother, anyone we know who have had babies. This is why there is this column, to help everyone solve the mysteries of those we place in our care. RR
