What is the easiest and best way to potty train my new pom?

What is the easiest and best way to potty train my new pom?

by Jennie McGill

(Benton, Arkansas)

I purchased a pom about a week ago. She is 11 weeks old. I have never had to train a dog from the beginning so I need help. I have tried a few things and she is not cooperating but I know she is still a baby. She will be an inside lap dog and I would like to pad train her. I do not have a picture of her yet but will send one when I do.

Easiest way to potty train a new pom.

by: Rita Rail

I have trained my poms the following way with success. My poms were very small and I did not want to bring them outside in winter. Since they were so tiny, I placed a bed, water, food and potty pad near the fireplace. After two weeks, I moved everything a few feet into the hallway eventually into the room that would be the permanent potty room. The food and water came into a corner of the kitchen. When you change the site for the potty pad, frequently pick up the puppy and carry her to her new place until she will follow you when called and put her on the potty pad until she does her business. This method has never failed for me. Eventually, she will go on her own. You may have a few mishaps but if this happens, make sure you show her where the pad is again. It has a been a no fail for me. Take care. RR

I am on my third pomeranian. I finally figured out how to potty train them properly! First things first, BE PERSISTENT! My Pom puppy has limited free time. She is either in her crate for bed time, in her large playpen, or with me on her leash for both inside and outside the house. Now I also am training on the pee pads but only for when she wakes up and before sleep.( it’s upstairs) The rest of the day she goes outside. Here is what you do…. When you have her on her leash at all times, puppies usually will want to move away from you to do their business, when you see your pup getting antsy and smelling the floor take her to the pad. And ALWaYS keep the pad in designated area that you know you won’t change. Give her a treat and praise every time she goes. When she makes a mistake, simply say no in a firm voice and move her mess to the pad with her and tell her yes. At night, not sure how the pup is doing at night? But keep her in a small enough kennel where she can barely turn around. This is so you aren’t giving her room to make a mistake, they don’t want to potty on them selves! And keep the crate in another room so they can’t whine to wake you up, this teaches them to hold it. Best of luck! 🙂
