Snorting &Coughing

Snorting &Coughing

My Pomeranian/Chow is a 2 year old female. She has a habit of snorting when excited or nervouse. Within the last 24 hours she is snorting more, sounds stuffy in the nose at times, and other times sounds clear. She has been coughing off and on. She is eating and drinking and is playfull..all seems normal except for the increased snorting and the interval coughs.

Pom in a panic & snorting & sneezing.

by: Rita Rail

I believe that your Pom is in a panic because it is nervous. I would advise that when you do pick it, wrap it in a blanket for security and make soothing noises to it. Your Pom will not stop this over-night but will probably stop when it feels assured by you. Some Poms need more assurance than others when entering a new home. I stated in a previous reply, how I had carried my tiny, three week old Pom on my hip just like I did with my babies, when she came home. Nine years later she is where I am but not always on my hip. I felt that since she had been rejected by her mother at three weeks old, I had to compensate. She slept in her cage in my bedroom until she started to cry because she was cold at night. Needless to say, she has shared my bed ever since. She and her sister Crystal both sleep on the foot of my bed wrapped in a cozy blanket because winter comes early where I reside. The problem with coughing and snorting when your dog is in a panic could be because it is using all it’s efforts against you. Emily is nine years old and she does this anytime and if it continues for more than two days, I give her just a 1/4″ of hairball treatment that I purchase from my vet. She only started this in the last two months. Long-haired dogs will consume a lot of hair. They are always licking at their feet and when they eat, many times, if they have a long ruff, this gets entangled in their mouth. I find that a person has to always study their dog as you would a child, this way you will gain more insight as what they are trying to convey to you by barking, whining, scratching at something. Poms are extremely intelligent. Emily as quite a few different barks that I finally have learned what she id trying to tell me. This is amazing, Try to understand your dog as much as it understands your commands. Try these methods at your own discretion as they have worked for me. RR
