Should I be worried? Twitch?

Should I be worried? Twitch?

by Becky

Hello, my son and I have a four month old pomeranian puppy. He was in charge of the training, I noticed he would get impatient when the puppy would not listen. He would spank her on the bottom or grab her suddenly and put her into her kennel, smack the top and yell no. She has this twitch that I never noticed untill after the incident where her head moved forward and back and her one or both eyes blink, not violent and does not affect any of her behaviour she is always happy and running around. I notice it comes on when we ask her to perform a command or she gets scalded. I spoke to my son and he knows not to be so impatient or rough anymore but I am worried about the twitch. Is it a sign of a brain or neurological problem or just anxiety/fear? Please help!

Should I Be worried? Twitch?

by: Rita Rail

YOU SHOULD BE WORRIED!!!! Anyone who treats a little dog as your son did should never be allowed again to ever touch it EVER!!!!!I am sorry but you posed the question and I have to answer you honestly. He does not know how to train a dog and if that was my situation, he would not be allowed to even raise his voice towards it. I surely believe that your poor little puppy does not understand this violent behavior. Ask your son if he ever peed “on command” for you when he was small? Your dog is suffering from your son’s bad behavior towards it. He has caused it a lot of anxiety when he used such violence to try to train it. Now the dog is afraid of being hurt and yelled at all times. I am appalled at his behavior. I think you should have your dog checked by a vet to find out about the head problem, it could have been seriously hurt. Animals need kindness and love and time to learn what we expect of them. I have always treated mine like my children who were never abused and your puppy has been abused by your son. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE ALLOWED THIS MANNER OF TRAINING. This saddens me very much. YOU LET IT HAPPEN. Please take the reins into your hands and have this taken care of as soon as possible. My best wishes are with you and your puppy. Take care. RR

I concur with Rita. Pom’s are so eager to learn and please their owners, they should be treated as you would treat your own child!!! Furthermore, positive reinforcement works so much better than punishing negative behaviors. Our baby attends “school” every week so that we can learn the PROPER ways to train him. It would behoove you to invest in some training yourself, not leave it to your abusive son. I’m appalled that you even considered this to be acceptable training. Now your dog is damaged emotionally, and possibly physically… WOW! Please get your baby some help… and most definitely a new trainer, or give it to someone how will care for it properly. :'(
