Pom squeeks when picked up

Pom is 10 years old. He hides under things, yelps when I pick him up. Won’t look at me and is lethargic. This happened once before and I had him x-rayed. No problems found and he eventually got better. Do not want to go thru that again as they put him to sleep and he had a hard time getting over that.
