I have a 9 month old Pom. Over heated.

by Peg

(Nappanee IN)

Molly is a 9 month old Pom. She loves the outside and plays in the yard so well. Her problem is, because her hair is so thick she gets over heated and gets sick. If I had her groomer thin out her coat will it cause damage?

She is a beautiful orange and black dog. She gets brushed every other day and doesn’t mind it at all…

Now that her winter coat is gone I was hoping her coat would be thinner but it is just getting thicker.

What can I do?

Thank you

9 month old pom overheated.

You must not leave your pom outside in the sun. They overheat very quickly. My two were outside many times but were on a very long, light chain so they could play and always in the shade. These small dogs can overheat very quickly. Always have a dish of cold water filled with ice cubes for them. I, personally would not thin out the hair but that is your decision as I am unable to see how much hair is involved. My dogs are never out on hot days, only in cooler weather. You have to use some guidelines but also your own common sense as you would a very small child which you would never leave out on a hot day even if a wearing a hat and light clothing covering them. You are the keeper as a person is with very young children. Think twice!!! Take care, RR
