whiners

That is called separation anxiety. LOL My pom howls like a wolf, and then my other pom chimes in. I haven’t found a cure yet, so I just deal with it. I do feel guilty and try not to be gone too long. Good luck.

Stop Poms From Whining

by: Rita Rail

My Poms have been subject to listening to music for two hours in the morning and approximately six hours in the afternoon. Whenever I leave the house they usually curl up and sleep and seem very contented. I had Emily three years before Crystal and she had no problem joining her. I enjoy opera when I am home but leave soft piano or a soft guitar tape for them. It is true that “music calms the savage beast”. Radios are used in the barns of racehorses in many places as it has been noted that they achieve a sense of soothing calmness. A treat and a sleep and my dogs are fine. This is the only solution except to put them in a small room with food and potty pads if needed and a bed or a blanket especially kept to put on the floor so they are unable to run around looking for you. It will not happen over-night but they will eventually calm down. You have to teach them that you are in charge. RR

Pom whining when leaving

by: Sandra

In my experience you must make sure your dog has had lots of exercise IE long walk before you plan to leave. Then put your Pomeranian in her safe spot IE bed make sure she lies down on her terms. Not your terms and when she does you walk away with a clear head no guilty feelings.

All dogs are super smart and know what you are thinking / feeling. If you walk away feeling guilty they will know and play on that emotion!

Try it on your day off maybe only leave for five minutes then increase it to ten and so on. Please write back and let us know how it goes.

Whining Pom. reply from Sandra

by: Rita Rail

I believe that is a good method similar to mine but I would not have been able to take mine out for a walk before I left the house as I would have been too tired as I usually do all my shopping on the same day. Please do not worry about them although a good idea at first is to confine them until they accept your rules. This similar to a 0ne year old baby that you know is dry and fed but does not want to nap. A little cry is in order and then “Blissful Sleep”.

Please do whatever you are comfortable to do in your own situation and perhaps using either of our methods will help you form your very own. RR

I must apologize to the lady that wrote in regarding the above problem. I am sorry I called you “Sandra” although it is a beautiful name. Sincerely. RR.

There IS something you can do!!!

NEW
by: B.Finnerty

As I read these comments I can’t believe no one suggested the method we used to calm our “screamer” (It sounded like he was being stabbed with a knife.) Any dog with serious separation anxiety just thinks when you leave their sight you are never coming back. They are scared and need their fears calmed. The BEST method to calm this particular fear is to show them you ARE coming back. For instance, the next full day you have with your baby. Leave the house as you normally would, but stand outside the door and as soon as you hear him stop whining come running back in making a huge deal that your there, praise him, say his name, give lots of attention. Then, repeat the whole process over and over until the whining stops or lessons considerably. IT WORKS!!!
