I regret getting my dog shaved because it ruined his coat. I prefer to get him trimmed no shorter than 1-2″ long. When you shave a pom, the coat seems to lose its luster and shine. The only thing you can do with the undercoat is brush it at least twice a week to remove some of it and thin it out.

I have a small pom called Emily and she has hair the is so thick and not until she was nine years old. None of my brushes worked. I purchased a thinning brush especially for this and some clips that holds the top hair up until I do one section at a time. Begin at the bottom and work your way up. The groomer cutting the hair does not make it stop growing. Most groomers cut the hair at the back so that feces will not get tangled in the hair. If you do not give the groomer specific instructions, she/he will do it as trained. I get my two done once a year and she also has a drawing of how I want the legs shaved a bit and the coat just below the stomach, instructions for the ruff. I do want a trim on the backside with thinner top hair flowing over the rectum. It has to be short underneath. I have drawn a picture of how I want my grooming done. Emily has clean pointed ears, clean face. Crystal has the same grooming but the ears are clean and rounded. I groom them myself the balance of the year. Be very specific, leave written instructions. Purchase a hair thinning brush , you will be fine. A regular brush does not thin the hair. I have seen the two types and I have bought both and I use both, some areas are different from others. I am sure you can do it as I learned to groom four different types of dogs. Take care RR

Many thanks A, I don’t plan to ever cut his hair more than the feathers that stick out. Brushing at least twice a week should be easy.
