He snivles and whines and barks all night!

He snivles and whines and barks all night!

I have an 8 year old intact male. I rescued him over a year ago. When I got him the lady says he sleeps in crates. Which he did, but lately he thinks he needs to be on the bed. He goes to bed in his crate at night fine, but then about half hour to an hour he starts to snivle..however I ignore him. Then when hubby comes to be a few hours later he starts again. He wants to come to bed with us. He is sleeping in his crate as sometimes the crate is the only place for him to sleep when traveling and he needs to learn that.

So he goes on and on all night. He has some quiet time during the night. Then the hour on the hour barking starts. I take him out for a pee, but then he tries to get on the bed when coming back but i grab him and crate him again. this goes on for hours. On occasion he has peed the bed if I just leave him to carry on. I never know as he pees every time i let him out.

I have raised boxers for years but never have had to deal with this. They go in their beds at night and sleep till morning. Not him.

I am trying to be tough and just let him throw his tantrum. finally I just get up with him where I used to take him back to bed with me for a little more sleep. Power struggle of the wills and he is not going on the bed any longer…

How do i stop this, I am exhausted from such a broken sleep..

He whines and barks all night.

I do not think that your dog being intact or not contributes to his problem. Have you tried making a den with his crate (cage)? always cover the top and sides and back with large towels or blankets and only leave the front without cover. All dogs have a den instinct just like in the wild. From my experience with one of my poms, I think your pom may be cold. He is actually going through the same routine as my one month old pom did. Emily had to be taken into bed so that we could sleep. When she actually became quiet, it was because she was exhausted from crying and barking and it would start over again. Remember, these small dogs are snuggled into their mothers legs and fur for comfort and warmth. Emily is now nine years old and she now has been sleeping at the foot of the bed with a blanket. When she gets very cold, which I think is because she is getting older and always seeking heat in the winter time although I do not keep my house cool, she has to snuggle up to me. I have a light quilt on my bed which I wash every week because of potential dog hair as Crystal also sleeps with me, not out of being cold but out of jealousy. She is also a pom but larger. I really think this is your only solution. Once a pom has decided something, it is extremely difficult to change them, especially where they feel comfortable. RR
