Do Poms tend to get seasonal skin allergies?

Do Poms tend to get seasonal skin allergies?

Osiris is 9years old and he is on a raw diet, organic ck from natures variety. He loves carrots, apples, etc (never canned or dry food). For the past 3 summers he has been getting crusted areas on either his tummy, rear and this year its on his back (alot of itch). I thought it was the pesticide for fleas but he hasn’t had a dose since 4/11/11. Before 3yrs ago he was treated w/ natural insect remedies (they worked great). Stupidly, I got a dumb idea to use Zodiac. So he has only had 2 viles in 3yrs, no pesticide this season and it’s back. I use Vetericyn (wound spray) and clears it up. The last 2xs I gave him 6 antibiotics. His stools are odor free and solid. Does any one have specific info on a diet related to the Icelandic diet? I thought getting back to the Poms roots may help me. Maybe he needs to be on fish? It’s seasonal though, he is fine during winter. Thanks for any and all help.Lorraine&Osiris

Pomeranian Seasonal Allergy Relief

by: Mike

Sounds to me like a seasonal problem. The dog food you are feeding him is a good organic one. Normally, with most Poms, their allergies are caused by their “parents” feeding them poor quality dog foods. But, like I said, you are already on top of that.

What type of shampoo are you using when you wash Osiris? How often do you bathe him? I would recommend a gentle oatmeal shampoo as this has helped with my dogs. Just make sure that you thoroughly rinse several times because just a little shampoo residue left behind can cause an allergic reaction in sensitive dogs.

I have also given half of a BENADRYL, recommended by my vet, to my dogs and it has worked as well. Just give half a pill wrapped up in sliced cheese once a day when scratching is very prominent.

Seasonal Skin Allergies?

by: Rita Rail

First of all, your Pom is not Icelandic. The Poms originated in Pomerania in Europe. Like my two Poms, I give them some raw vegetables and fruit, an apple is Crystal’s favourite. She could eat a whole one. Emily does not like them. You can test your feeding of vegetables and fruit by allocating only two at a time. This method will help to identify if the raw foods are a problem. Ours and animal systems change at times indicating that for some unknown reason, food we have been consuming for a long period of time, we are suddenly allergic to with no known reason. Perhaps, you need to change his daily food even though it is of good quality and he likes it. I have used Hill’s Science Diet Small Bites for all of my dogs and Hill’s Science Diet Cat Food for my Persians. They all thrived on this until they passed away. Most were very old, even to 17 yrs, old. This is worth giving it a try. Take care. RR
