Collapsed Trachea

Collapsed Trachea

by Mike

(Springfield, MO)

Our Pom is 12+ years old and I believe she is suffering from Collapsed Trachea. She coughs often and especially when she is excited. She spits up frequently, a dark green substance and is absolutely ruining our carpets. Is there a treatment or is it time to help her move to her eternal rest. Really wanting to know. We love her dearly and don’t want her to suffer.

Collapsed Trachea

by: Anonymous

I suggest you take your dog to the vet. My 8 yr. old pom suffers from a collapsed trachea and my vet put him on meds. to help him breath. If he isn’t on the meds. his breathing sounds wheezy, he coughs a lot after he drinks water, and he pants more frequently which are all signs that he is struggling to breath. He has never had a greenish discharge. That sounds like an infection to me.

Also, we were told to keep him cool. The symptoms are worse in the summer because of the heat. I try to keep a fan on him when he is laying down. It really helps him a lot. The vet also told us to get him to lose a pound or 2 because that is what causes the muscles to weaken which in turn causes the trachea to collapse. I hope this helps you.

Get to the vet… It may not be the trachea

by: Anonymous

Never assume that coughing is a collapsed trachea unless a vet has made that diagnosis. It can also be indicative of a heart-related issue. Green vomit can be due to the dog eating grass or some plant material, it can also be bile and a sign of a stomach issue.

A bout of coughing if collapsed trachea responds well to cold, much like a baby with croup. If cool outside, take the dog outside to breathe the cool air. Opening a freezer door and allowing the dog to breathe the cold air will also help. Holding the dog upright to take the weight off of the trachea is helpful. A humidifier can also help. I have walked floors with a coughing dog many nights and by incorporating these things in her care, was able to not only make her much more comfortable, but she was taken off the meds as she no longer needed them. The humidifier needs to run 24/7.

If this is a stomach issue, please know that coughing can also accompany that issue… Think acid reflux, but the green color is troubling. Please get your furry baby to the vet pronto!
