Breathing heaving, Collapsed trachea

Breathing heaving, Collapsed trachea

(Vanouver Island)

Hello, I have a 2 1/2 yr old male Pom. Ive noticed that he’s been breathing a lot heavier lately as well as I think he’s showing signs of a collapsed trachea. It breaks my heart to hear him struggling, Is there anything I can do to do? Thank-you

Breathingheaving, Collapsed trachea

NEW
by: Rita Rail

I thought my pom Crystal had a collapsed trachea because when I would get her up in the morning, she would cough, wheeze and have difficulties catching her breath. This scared me to no end. I would massage her throat and I even thought of how do I give her mouth to mouth and found out it was mouth to nose. I would also try to make her drink water from my hand. Having had many cats also, I thought of hairball medicine because poms are always biting on their feet and grooming here and there. After three doses of the medicine, she was not getting any better. Finally, I brought her to my vet who said she did not have a collapsed trachea but she had gained a pound and when dogs gain weight, they form fat tissue in the throat area also. My vet confirmed that because of the way Crystal was sleeping all night this could affect her in the morning until her throat muscles went into place after a night’s sleep as it did not affect her during the day when she was more active. It has been two weeks now and this is not happening every morning but if it does, I massage her throat and try to have her drink some water out of my hand because she will not eat or drink immediately during an episode. When she was one pound lighter, she was not doing this. Try this and if it does not help, I suggest you take your pom to a vet. You have a very pretty pom. Take care…RR
